Design the Best System for Your Artificial Turf Fields
Whether you have designed 100 artificial turf fields or this is your first, it always helps to have a qualified partner to work through any obstacles that may arise during the design process. Each project is a partnership with Brock. Working together we build the greatest fields possible for the client, on time, and on budget. It’s imperative that risk be minimized from design to completion of the project and nothing adds more risk than building a field over a sub-par shock pad. Going cheap on the base-layer can result in a costly repair of the whole field, or worse, severe injury to athletes utilizing your field.
Brock USA is the only company with shock pad systems specifically engineered for artificial turf fields of all types. Each product line was developed using a qualified team of sports field designers, athletic directors, engineers, contractors, biomechanics scientists, and sports science laboratories.
Synthetic turf fields are now sophisticated systems, not just sand and rubber over rock. Each component must work in harmony, so you cannot simply use any turf, with any infill, over any shock pad. Your reputation, like our own, is to be taken seriously. In this partnership, we do everything we can to make the process of selection and project execution successful for you and your client.
Engineered Specifically for Artificial Turf Fields
Brock’s patented polypropylene materials are the only shock pads on the market specifically engineered for artificial turf fields. Our approach reduces risk for you and your client. We are proud to say we have never had a product failure: not with drainage, separation, buckling, or any of the myriad of issues faced with “repurposed” products. Fields are a precise piece of equipment that affect athlete safety, so taking shortcuts on what’s under your turf never ends well for the designer or end user. A good artificial turf field will mimic a great natural grass one for head impacts. Turf over stone won’t get you there. Brock will.
The Standard for HIC Test, G-Max, & Deformation Testing Requirements
THERE IS A REASON ATHLETES THAT PLAY FOOTBALL, SOCCER, BASEBALL, ETC. PREFER QUALITY, NATURAL GRASS. A GOOD NATURAL GRASS PLAYING FIELD PROVIDES CUSHION WHEN THE ATHLETES FALL OR ARE TAKEN DOWN, IT PROVIDES A STIFF, FAST SURFACE THAT THE ATHLETES CAN DIG INTO, AND IT HAS NATURALLY OCCURRING WATER DRAINAGE. THIS IS WHY ARTIFICIAL TURF FIELDS’ PROPERTIES SHOULD ALWAYS BE COMPARED TO THEIR NATURAL GRASS COUNTERPARTS. THE AMERICAN STANDARD FOR TESTING MATERIALS HAS ESTABLISHED THREE PRIMARY TESTING METHODS TO RATE ARTIFICIAL TURF FIELD PROPERTIES: THE G-MAX TEST, HIC TEST, AND DEFORMATION TEST. EACH OF THESE TESTS ARE ALSO CONDUCTED ON NATURAL GRASS FIELDS, SO THERE ARE DIRECT COMPARISONS TO ARTIFICIAL TURF FIELDS’ PERFORMANCE.
HIC is the internationally recognized test standard for head injuries. It drops a 10 lb hemispherical impacter from increasing heights to determine Critical Fall Height. It’s the same test used in playgrounds, automotive crashes, wall padding, pole vault, and the WR Reg22 standard for artificial turf. The higher the Critical Fall Height, the more protective the surface is for head injuries.

This test method covers the measurement of certain shock-absorbing characteristics, like during body impacts. It’s applicable to natural and artificial playing surface systems. It does not correlate to head injury. It drops a 20 lb flat missile from 24”. GMax is a good measurement when used in conjunction with HIC above, but as a standalone test is not a total measure of field safety.

(FIRMNESS UNDER FOOT)
This test simulates the heel strike of an adult running athlete in stride. This is the softness or hardness under foot during play. A great natural grass field hits the “sweet spot” of being firm under foot while producing very low gmax and high Critical Fall Height. Which is why quality natural turf is the benchmark for quality artificial turf.
